Chestnuts, Harvey Reid's 10th solo album is his first all-instrumental album
in 5 years, and is subtitled "Grand Old Songs From Long Ago".
This 60 minute album features Harvey's peerless 6-string, 12-string &
slide guitar, autoharp and 6-string banjo playing on 9 solo tracks, plus
features Dan Crary (guitar), David Surette (guitar, mandolin, bouzouki),
Brian Silber (viola) and Moondi Klein (guitar) on 10 duet & trio tracks.
Chestnuts was recorded direct-to-digital, in what has become Reid's
trademark style, and is destined to become a classic in traditional instrumental
music albums. Harvey's fingerstyle guitar playing is at the forefront, though
he does provide some hot flatpicking, and shows off his autoharp and inimitable
6-string banjo skills on 3 cuts each. There is a nice mixture of lovely
melodies and hot picking, and this album should please his fans and make
many new ones.
Chestnuts is available CD jewel box format
by mail, phone, e-mail ( and at finer stores
nationwide, with appropriate wholesale and
distributor prices. Ordering information
"...A supremely talented multi-instrumentalist with a rare gift for recording
solo albums that don't sound like solo albums... a presence and character
few other artists manage. Never one to let hot licks or flashy technique interfere
with the musician's ultimate responsibility to communicate an emotional message
through his instrument, Reid plays gorgeous, well-crafted music here that
grows and grows through repeated listenings....Throughout this CD, the instrumental
sound approaches perfection, a real tribute to Reid's ability to capture true
acoustic sounds....This CD belongs in the collection of everyone who loves
the sound of acoustic instruments played with understated taste and elegant
tone. Highly recommended. " BLUEGRASS UNLIMITED
"Reid's ringing steel-strings shine in this outstanding acoustic collection
of folk, bluegrass, gospel and British Isles instrumentals. He knows how to
awaken a melody with a combination of dynamics, playfulness, and superb articulation.
Recorded live to DAT, the tracks have a presence and a warmth that invite
repeated listening with a cup of steaming java and a good novel." GUITAR
PLAYER MAGAZINE
"Harvey Reid is the consummate musical technician. His playing is deliberate,
polished and precise, and he knows his way around the "fingerboard"
of whatever instrument he chooses to pick up. Each and every number is executed
with dignity, refinement and the utmost in good taste." AUTOHARP CLEARINGHOUSE
"The variety of techniques and arrangements, plus the familiarity and
quality of the material make this an appealing album. It works as enjoyable
background music for chores and such, yet also rewards more attentive listening."
