Hard Times in the U.S. of A.

I picked up the phone to call up my friend
I wondered if I would ever see him again…

Oh it's hard times in the U.S. of A, hard, hard times

I saw Dr. Fauci on public TV
He said you should always keep 6 feet from me...

We’re all in this together, we’re bored and we’re scared
It’s a cryin’ shame we weren’t better prepared...

I went to the store to buy me some smokes
I saw a guy with no mask, he said it was all a big hoax...

[Can’t go to church, kids aren’t in their schools]

We're doing outdoor church, kids are in online school
The president’s crazy, half the governors are fools...

Wear a mask keep your distance how hard can it be?
My friends overseas feel sorry for me...

The dog is in heaven ‘cause we’re home all day long
The family’s getting frazzled, they’re camping on the lawn...

This government umbrella will it work when it rains?
We got Doctors without Borders, politicians without brains...

Corona loves parties, restaurants and bars
It loves all the freedom in this great country of ours...

All those blessed workers out on the front lines
Risking their lives to save yours and mine...

Doctors and nurses making their rounds
Like soldiers, like saints wearing hospital gowns...

Here’s to live music whatever that is
The show must go on, that’s the rule in showbiz...

So we play our guitars out on the digital street
Hoping people will donate so our kids can eat...

COVID took thousands, it took old John Prine
He would have sung his song, so I’m singing mine...

Here’s to the future and what it may hold
Will I go broke, will I die or will I grow old?...

How will this end, is it vaccine or bust?
Will we flatten this curve or will it flatten us?...
